Description

Whirlpool, the US manufacturer of household appliances, has announced plans to cut 153 jobs at its tumble dryer factory in Amiens. To implement the cuts, the group proposed early retirement for about 70 employees, plus voluntary redundancies. If the number of voluntary redundanciesdoes not suffice, "there will be direct dismissals".

Management also presented a plan to reorganize working time, which would bring about an increase of 7% in working hours, and an increase of 2% in wages.

In compensation for these "endeavours" the direction promised to develop a new model of tumble dryer in Amiens, and to maintain for five years the current level of production. Finally, the workers will receive in January 2009 a one-off payment of EUR 1,200.
