Description

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced on 17 June 2008 the loss of 54,000 military and civilian defence jobs. Approximately 50 bases and defence facilities will be closed in early July. The restructuring will affect 24% of the workforce in the Air Force, 17% in the Army, and 11% in the Navy. The main objective of the government is to modernize the army without any additional expenditure and by using the savings generated by this large restructuring. The plan is to save EUR 2 billion each year from 2011 onwards. Besides, the government plans to spend EUR 160 million per year for the implementation of these cost-cutting measures, which correspond to about EUR 20,000 per person.
