Description
Sorin, a manufacturer of cardiac rhythm management systems, is to cut 175 jobs at its plant located in Saluggia, in the province of Vercelli. The company has decided to strengthen its competitiveness, focusing new investments in its core business (i.e. cardiac surgery and cardiac rhythm management). For this reason, the Sorin group has announced the 2008-2010 reorganisation plan that envisages the loss of around 300 jobs worldwide, of which 175 at the Saluggia plant. Sorin has its headquarters in Saluggia and employs around 1,300 employees.
The trade unions reacted to the decision by involving the national and local authorities in order to find ways to avoid the redundancies envisaged by the reorganisation plan.
On 24 September 2008, the Government has approved the request for the “extraordinary” Wages Guarantee Fund for around 400 workers employed at the Sorin plant. The scheme will last one year. During this period, the company and the trade unions will try to find measures in order to avoid the redundancies announced by the company.
The Sorin Group is a medical technology leader focused on the development of products used to treat cardiovascular and renal diseases. It has about 4,500 employees working at its facilities in more than 80 countries throughout the world. In Italy, the Sorin group has 2,377 employees.
