Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Logica, UK-based global IT and management consultancy company, has announced that it is to offshore some of its activities to India with the loss of 1,300 jobs in Europe by the end of 2008. Some 900 jobs will be lost in the UK and another 100 in France; there is no information on other countries affected by this restructuring. The company also plans to increase the number of workers in low-cost countries (from 3,450 up to 8,000). With an investment of EUR 41 million, Logica will expand its marketing and sales activities and increase the number of employees in the field of business consulting from 2,500 to 3,500. The whole restructuring plan will amount to EUR 137 million and it is expected to generate EUR 80 million savings per year. The company currently employs 39,000 across 36 countries.
