Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Swedish equipment manufacturer, Trelleborg, announced on 28 April 2008 that it is to cut 311 jobs at its site in Carquefou (Loire-Atlantique). A further 140 temporary workers will be affected as their contracts will not be renewed. All in all, 451 workers will, thus, lose their jobs by the end of March 2010. The production of radiator hoses will be relocated to Turkey and Poland, and the plastic mixing activity to Clermont-Ferrand (Centre), Reims (Marne) and Czech Republic. The management has noted that Trelleborg is the last manufacturer of radiator hoses operating in France, all the competitors are in Eastern Europe, where the manpower is cheaper. Moreover, the management plans to reassess the agreement on working-time (covering the 35h week).
