On 7 April 2008, the regional government of Styria (Steiermark) announced that the German ThyssenKrupp plant in Gratkorn was planning to close within the next 18 months, with the loss of about 290 jobs by October 2009. The company has been manufacturing elevators at its Gratkorn plant. According to the regional government, the German company headquarters have decided to regroup the whole company and concentrate activities at their main plants in Germany in order to remain competitive. The employees concerned by the closure - half blue- and half white-collars - are highly skilled and therefore expected to be reemployed in the Greater Graz area. A social plan is to be negotiated between the company, the Public Employment Service (Arbeitsmarktservice) and the regional authorities.
