The Co-operative Group, the world’s largest consumer co-operative, has announced that it is to close three of its department stores in Sheffield with the loss of 130 jobs. The company attributes the decision to close the stores to increased competition.
The Co-operative group has a turnover of £9.4bn, 4.5 million members and 87,500 employees. It operates over 4,500 trading outlets throughout the UK, including department stores, food stores, pharmacies, travel branches and funeral homes.
