Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Lanxess, an Antwerp-based firm that manufactures plastic products, is to cut 127 jobs in Antwerp. Management at the firm attribute the decision to the need of the company to be competitive in rapidly changing market conditions. The job losses are due to be implemented during 2008. Belgian trade unions are opposed to any compulsory redundancies at the site and desire to negotiate alterative arrangements with company management. As of September 2007, no negotiations between the parties have begun and no strike action has been planned by Belgian unions. Lanxess employs 1000 at its Antwerp site, and is a part of the Bayer Group.
