Description

British Bakeries, a manufacturer of bread with operations across the UK, is to close sites in Bradford and Telford with the loss of 430 jobs. The plant in Bradford produced bread and employed 370, whilst the Telford site was used as a depot by the firm and employed 60. Staff and their trade unions have been told of the plans and a consultation process with the unions has begun. A British Bakeries spokesman said the decision to close the sites was ‘not taken lightly’ and was because of declining bread sales. The spokesman stated:

‘The move reflects an overall fall in bread consumption, changing consumer habits and the increased self-sufficiency of British Bakeries' operations in the south of England, resulting in a reduced requirement to transfer break and morning goods down the country.’

‘We understand the impact these proposals will have on those affected and will work with them to ensure that the reasons for these proposals and the options open to them are fully understood.’

British Bakeries operates from 23 manufacturing and distribution sites in the UK, and employs 6,500.
