Description

Eesti Raudtee, an Estonian rail transport company, is to make 200 redundant. The decision to make the redundancies is attributable to falling Russian demand for Estonian rail services. This trend became particularly marked after a diplomatic row between Russia and Estonia in May 2007. The majority of the employees who are to lose their jobs work in areas related directly related to rail transit, however some work in administration. 2357 employees work for the firm across Estonia.

Several firms have expressed interest in employing the workers who are to lose their jobs. Included in these firms are Falck, a security company, Kohila, a paper mill, and Elcoteq, an electronics manufacturer. There are also vacancies in Tallinn for various public transport companies. Eesti Raudtee, together with the Estonian Labour Market Board, also plans to help the affected workers to re-train.
