Description

Cumbrian Seafoods, a firm that produces and processes seafood, has announced that it is to open a new site in County Durham, with the creation of around 300 jobs. The firm said it looked at 19 different locations in the North before choosing Seaham for its expansion. A company spokesman said the new plant, near the depots of two of its main customers, would process shellfish. The Seaham plant is due to open on 13 August and the firm has begun a recruitment campaign. Peter Vassallo, head of the company, said: 'We looked at 19 sites between Doncaster and Amble and chose Seaham for its geographical location, being close to the depots of two leading customers, and the availability of labour.' 'We will be creating a new centre of excellence within the company.' Mr Vassallo said the new plant was environmentally friendly with freezers running on ammonia to reduce emissions. The 10 million GBP investment at Seaham is being backed by One NorthEast.
