Description

Bradford City Council has announced it is to cut 408 jobs in a bid to save money. The Council said it wanted to reduce its budget by 13.6 million GBP this year. The GMB union said 500 jobs would be axed, and said employees had not been consulted on the plans. The council said it wanted to avoid compulsory redundancies by freezing vacancies and redeploying staff. Ray Alderman, the GMB's convener at the council, said the job losses were a 'disgrace'. He added: 'We demand that the council withdraws its statement and enters into consultation and negotiation with the unions.' The council insisted it was liaising with its staff and trade unions on how to achieve savings by streamlining management and administrative posts. Chief executive Tony Reeves said: 'We must constantly work to be more efficient and give better value for money to residents.'

'It is never easy to carry out a process like this and it is vital we work closely with everyone affected.'

'We employ more than 21,000 staff who work hard for the district and we are very mindful of the effect this process will have on them.'

'However, we must constantly analyse how the council spends its resources - pushing them, where possible, to the front line.'

The council said no final decision on the number of job losses would be made until the end of a 90-day consultation with unions.
