Description

The first Spanish chemical group Ercros has issued an Increased Efficiency Programme which will lead to 355 direct dismissals and the closure of several factories. The reasons given are the need for new integrated centres of production and the intention of Ercros to concentrate its efforts in three main lines of production. As a result of the programme, the factories in Sant Celoni (Barcelona) -54 direct dismissals- and Monzon (Huesca) -130 direct dismissals- will close, the latter in two steps. The factories in Silla and Catadau (Valencia) and Huelva (37 workers in total in the three) will also close, due to the company's plans to reduce its activity in agrochemical production. The factory in Huesca will remain open, but will stop some of its production lines and increase its activity in others. Ercros’ CEO has announced that 120 of the 355 planned dismissals will take place in 2007. The trade unions reject this programme and claim for an alternative plan.
