Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Telecom service provider Alcatel Lucent announced on 12 February 2007 that it will reduce its workforce in the Netherlands by 140-180 jobs, out of a total workforce of 700, in the next two years. A meeting with the works council and the unions was called to begin discussing how the company’s international synergy plans will impact employee positions in the Netherlands. The company, together with the works council and the unions, will offer outplacement services for affected employees.
Worldwide, the cost reductions after the merger between Lucent and Alcatel in 2006 will result in a loss of 12,500 jobs.
