Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In February 2008, MAXIMA Eesti, a retailer of food, beverages and tobacco, opened a new supermarket in Narva creating about 160 jobs. The company announced that by the end of the year the total number of employees may reach 3724 as a result of opening 15-20 new stores. Its long term intention is to own 100-120 stores by 2011. By January 2008, the company was already employing 2124 people all over Estonia. Previously in March 2007, this subsidiary of the Lithuanian retail operator MAXIMA LT, opened a new supermarket in Tartu with 150 new employees and at that time announced it was planning to open ten smaller shops before the end of 2007. At that stage MAXIMA Eesti was already employing about 1300 people in its stores all over Estonia
