Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 12 April 2008, a spokesperson of Franco-American telecommunication giant Alcatel-Lucent presented new figures concerning the job cuts announced last year (see below). Around 515 jobs shall be cut in Stuttgart, Berlin and Nuremberg. In Stuttgar, the company stated that 280 jobs instead of the initially announced 430-470 jobs will be cut. In Nuremberg, 225 jobs will be lost (instead of 270-300 jobs). In Berlin only 10 jobs are to be cut (initially 35 jobs were threatened).
On 23 February 2007, IG Metall, the German Metalworkers' Union and the works council released a note saying that Alcatel-Lucent was planning to cut 430 jobs at Alcatel SEL at Stuttgart. Alcatel-Lucent employed 5,000 people in Germany. Out of these, 2,300 worked in Stuttgart at SEL. The job cutting measures are expected to affect the research and development staff. SEL, a former German electronics specialist, was first bought by Nokia and in 1991, Alcatel acquired 98% of the company.
On 27 February 2007, a spokesperson of Alcatel-Lucent confirmed that altogether 870 employees would lose their jobs throughout Germany. The most heavily affected units will be Stuttgart (470 job cuts) and Nuremberg (300 job cuts). The current workforce at the latter is 1,200 employees. The job reductions shall take place by the end of 2008. This was the first reliable information on job cutting plans in Germany following Alcatel-Lucent's announcement of major worldwide restructuring and job cutting measures on 9 February 2007. The company is reacting to severe net losses and a decline in sales by cutting up to 13,000 jobs worldwide.
