Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The traditional skis and sports equipment manufacturer Atomic, headquartered in Altenmarkt (Salzburg), will in the near future dismiss up to 80 employees. The company currently employs around 500 people. According to the company’s CEO, Michael Schineis, 30 regular employees and in between 40 and 50 temporary agency workers stand to lose their jobs. This is because the firm has to adjust its production capacities to the significant fall in turnover during the 2006-7 winter season, due to the extremely gentle climate and the consequent shortage of snow in Austria. At present, there is no social plan in force.
