The Norwegian oil drilling group of companies, Seadrill, has its headquarter outside Stavanger. The group currently employs 5,095 people, half of them in Norway. The group owns 35 drilling units - rigs, ships and jack-up rigs - 14 of which are currently being built. The group has activities in 14 countries and four continents and is the 6th largest drilling company in the world in market value.

The group has recently experienced large growth and it is likely to become the world leader after the aquisition of Smedvig. The company announced on 9 February 2007 that it is expecting to increase its global workforce to 7,500 by the end of 2009. The number will increase especially in 2008 when the new rigs are finished. About 1/3 will be Norwegians, the rest mainly locals in the countries where the drilling acitivity is.
