Description

The Nuova Magrini Galileo produces facilities for high voltage and extra high voltage circuit breakers for the national and international markets. In Italy, the company has three plants: Battaglia Terme, in the province of Padua (200 employees); Stezzano, in the province of Bergamo (105 employees); and Cairo Montenotte, in the province of Savona (120 employees).

In the 2005, the multinational company Siemens AG - which is a direct competitor of the Nuova Magrini Galileo in the same market niches - took over the Italian company and, at the end of 2006, decided to shut down the activity of the industrial site in Battaglia Terme.

The trade union representatives at the Battaglia Terme plant reacted to the decision by going out on strike for an indefinite period. The workersÂ’ protest action is supported by the local authorities and the residents of the small towns located near the industrial site.

The trade unions have involved in the dispute local and national organisations and institutions, in order to find ways to avoid the decision taken by Siemens or, alternatively, to find other companies that could be interested in buying out the Nuova Magrini Galileo.
