Description

Glaverbel Donchery, part of the Japanese group Asahi Glassa, the first producer of flat glass in the world, announced on 5 September 2006 the closure of the manufacturing site of flat glasses for cars, buses and trucks in Donchery. The site, that employs 122 people, is expected to close before September 2007. In 2005, the factory Glaverbel Donchery lost 1.5 million Euro. The director of Glaverbel Donchery announced that employees would be engaged in other French factories but this has not been confirmed yet. In this sense, the trade unions have contacted other companies that might be interested in taking over the activity of Glaverbel Donchery and, consequently, the employment. Before October 2006 (dates unknown at the moment), a 'semi-official' (because the company will be almost closed) work's council will study the resumption of some employees in the Glaverbel group but there is no information on the actual number. Glaverbel employs 2,400 people in France and more than 50,000 people in the world.
