Description

Trade unions have agreed on terms for voluntary redundancies at the Vauxhall car parts supplier TDS Logistics after the firm announced 198 job cuts at their Ellesmere Port plant. Production at the plant was halted last week after staff at TDS walked out in an unofficial dispute over redundancies. TDS wants to cut the jobs in order to move from three to two shifts. The company has since put forward revised conditions for redundancy payments and promised further consultation. A statement from TDS said: 'The company wish to achieve these redundancies through voluntary means and reach agreement with the trade unions for employees to leave the business in phases from 21st July 2006.'

'The Trade Unions will continue to meet with the company to monitor the response to the voluntary programme and will continue to consult in order to minimise the number of redundancies.'

T&G deputy regional secretary, Mick Whitley, said: 'These new and enhanced terms are much better than the original offer of minimum statutory terms so in that sense we believe we have achieved something.'

'But the fact remains there will be redundancies because of further contraction in manufacturing and nobody can take any comfort from that.'

'We will now work with TDS to make sure the voluntary redundancies are managed properly and fairly to all concerned.'

The redundancies are linked to changes being implemented at the nearby Vauxhall plant at Ellesmere Port, which is due to end the night shift in a few weeks time with the loss of around 900 jobs.
