Description
Domar, a company that produces washing machines, announced on 18 May 2006 the initiation of a redundancy procedure that would affect 86 out of 329 of its employees. These 86 employees represented 26% of the staff of the unit that the company has in Martorelles (Barcelona).
In 2004 the company and the employees negotiated with the aim to avoid the closure. The employees accepted then a wage freeze along with working longer hours.
On 6 June 2006 Domar presented its suspension of payments and announced 100 dismissals (31% of the staff of the Barcelona unit), instead of the 86 it had previously announced (18 May 2006).
The company announced on 5 July 2006 that there will be 204 employees dismissed instead of 100.
The employees are on strike since 5 September 2006 and have set up camping tents in the surroundings of the company. They will keep the tent there throughout the month of September if an agreement with the company is not reached.
