Description

The Marzotto group is a world leader in the textile industry. The company operates in the textile sector with prestigious brands that make it a major player in terms of quality, quantity, R&D on world fabric and yarn markets. In Italy the Marzotto group’s activities are carried out in seven plants and at the Valdagno (VI) plant are the Marzotto group’s headquarters. On 8 May the company announced to the trade unions a reorganisation plan that provides the complete termination of yarn’s production at the Valdagno factory and the consequent loss of 146 jobs with a view to starting immediately the mobility procedure (700 workers are employed in the Valdagno plant). In fact, the company has decided to transfer the yarn’s production to countries that have lower labour costs than Italy. On 9 May the trade unions representatives at the Valdagno plant reacted to the decision by going out on strike and blockading the factory gates. After the protest action, the company and the trade unions have planned some meetings to reach an agreement on recourse to the “social shock absorbers” for the redundant personnel. In particular, in order to reduce the negative social impact of lay-offs, the trade unions support the recourse to measures such as “mobility” with a view to early retirement, economic incentives for voluntary resignation or retirement for those who are already eligible (according to the unions, around 40 workers have fulfilled the requirements for a seniority pension) and recourse to measures of outplacement and redeployment.
