Description

On 27 March 2006, Daimler Chrysler (automotive) announced that it will stop production of the Smart For-Four (40,000 a year) in the Nedcar factory in Born. This means that only the production of the Mitsubishi Colt will remain (75,000 a year). Mitsubishi wants to cut the number of shifts from two to one, resulting in an estimated loss of jobs of 1000. Employee representatives (both the unions and the very active works council) have demanded that Mitsubishi promises to locate the production of future models in Born. Employees have threatened to take finished Colts hostage, after which Mitsubishi started to transfer these cars to other locations.

The unions and the works council fear that in the long run Nedcar Born will be closed down completely. This will mean a direct loss of another 2000 jobs, plus 7000 jobs at suppliers of parts. Local authorities have asked for state support.
