Description
The Carnex group, Hungary's second largest meat processing company, announced collective redundancies affecting 400 workers in one of its plants in the South East of Hungary. The Békéscsaba plant, which processes poultry meat, currently has 800 employees. The group spokesperson announced that, due to news about bird flu, poultry consumption has decreased by 20% in the past five weeks, causing major losses for the company. The lay-offs would take effect within a month after the announcement and have been reported to the country's unemployment office. Some workers will be offered jobs at other plants belonging to the group some 40 kilometres away from Békéscsaba but at present it is not known how many will be able to take on commuting. Production is said to be resumed when the market allows.
