Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ceset, a manufacturer of electric motors for household appliances which is part of the US-based multinational Emerson Electric, announced 86 redundancies (81 blue-collar workers and 5 white-collar workers). The company management maintain that the employment reduction was made necessary by a reduction in production volumes. The production of motors for dishwashers will be discontinued, whereas the production for washing machines will be reduced. The unions supports alternative solutions to avoid redundancies, such as a general reduction in working hours liked to recourse to so-called "solidarity contracts".
