Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In spring 2006, the telecommunications company Elisa has undertaken personnel negotiations in different parts of the company. These personnel negotiations, started on Monday, 27 February 2006 and concern 1,000 jobs out of the total of 4700. The aim is to cut jobs by 210.
Most dismissals were to be made in the business customer unit, in which the personnel negotiations ended the 19 April. Altogether 112 jobs will be cut in this unit. Redundancy packages have been offered for this unit, and a result, about 70 persons left already before the negotiations started.
The personnel negotiation in the private customer and business unit were completed at the end of March. The unit managed with fewer dismissals than anticipated. Notice will be given to 23 workers out of around 1,400 employees in the unit.
Elisa will also eliminate overlapping tasks from product development and sales. It will also reduce jobs in the Eunet unit acquired in connection with the purchase of the teleoperator Saunalahti. The personnel negotiations concern around twenty jobs. Customer information or call centre activities are excluded from the negotiations.
The popularity of voluntary redundancy packages has lowered the number of dismissals at Elisa. Executive Vice President Sami Ylikortes says that some dozens of redundancy packages have been taken.
Personnel cuts are part of the companys three year restructuring programme aiming at improving its profitability between 2005 and 2007. Elisa has cut down its personnel by around 2,000 in the last two years.
