Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Some 150 out of about 400 employees currently engaged at the Philips production site in Klagenfurt (Kärnten) stand to lose their jobs by the end of 2006. According to a press officer of the Philips Austria concern, this plan is due to increasing labour costs at the site. In response to increasing competitive pressure, the series production of electrical toilet requisites will be relocated to Eastern European and Asian Countries. The Klagenfurt production site will thus be completely closed down, while a small innovations and competence centre in the area of healthcare and wellness is planned to be set up. All other 250 workers involved in administrative and product development tasks will not be hit. Regional representatives of the Austrian Trade Union Federation have urged the management to start negotiations on a social plan for the employees concerned.
