Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hewlett Packard is to cut 968 posts in Britain as part of a plan to reduce its global headcount by 14,500, about 10% of its workforce. The firm said it was still too early to identify which locations in Britain would be affected. The company has sites in London, Birmingham, Reading, Bristol, Bracknell, Warrington and Glasgow. A spokeswoman said the company is in the process of consulting with staff and that it was not yet clear how many of the redundancies would be compulsory. The company said the job losses would be aimed at support functions such as human resources, information technology and finance. Sales and production jobs are less likely to be hit. Earlier in September, the company said it would be laying off 5,900 people in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. French union leaders yesterday called for a one-day strike to protest over the 1,240 job losses planned in France.
