Description

UK Coal has blamed geological difficulties for its decision to halt production at the Harworth colliery in Nottinghamshire, which employs 460 workers. Harworth is one of a handful of deep mines remaining in Britain and it is to be mothballed once the current coalface is worked out.

UK Coal said that it was offering jobs at other pits to the Harworth workforce and was looking at the feasibility of working another seam from the site. 'There will not be compulsory redundancies, there are jobs at other collieries. We are trying to keep the skills in the industry.'
