Description
Whirlpool Europe announced a reorganisation plan which will involve investments of some €100 million in the 2005-2008 period, including training initiatives. Production will concentrate on high-quality products both in the cooking (cookers and ovens) and cooling (fridges) ranges, in order to avoid the increasing competition on lower quality products. Negotiations between the unions and the company management led to a significant reduction in the redundancies initially announced, from some 1,000 to 520. Redundancies will mostly involve workers who are eligible for retirement or who will be "accompanied" to retirement by the income support provided by the "mobility allowance". In both cases, the firm will provide economic incentives for the workers involved.
