Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Austrian group Eybl, an automotive interiors supplier, currently has two factories in Deta, Timiş county (Vest region). The first factory manufactures textile and leather furnishings for Renault, while the second produces leather steering columns for Mercedes, VW, Toyota, BMW and Rover. Eybl is currently running a €2.5 million investment to build a new production section in Deta, thus extending the production area by 40% and the production capacity by 30%. The new section is scheduled to start production by July 2005, creating some 400-500 new jobs.
The Eybl Group has an annual turnover of about €350 million.
At present, the two factories in Deta, together with other three factories in Hungary and one in Slovakia make up 50% of the Austrian concern's production in Europe. Eybl entered the Romanian market in 1999, through a greenfield investment of approximately €10 million. Eybl's development policy in Romania includes the opening of a third factory this year, in Caraş-Severin county (Vest region), following a €4 million investment. The factory will manufacture automotive interiors exclusively. In addition to business development investments, the company also runs a special programme for employees, including the establishment of a kindergarten for employees' children, a canteen and a dental surgery.
