Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Linde Kältetechnik, a manufacturer of cooling equipment that had been sold to the American Carrier Corporation in early 2004, wants to cut its workforce of 2,500 by half. In its Mainz-Kostheim factory, 800 jobs will be lost, at the headquarters in Cologne a further 300 jobs will be shed. Another 200 jobs will go at different service points. Production is to be shifted to France and the Czech Republic. Workers' representatives have started negotiating a redundancy program with the management. There is no information so far on how the lay-offs will be managed.
