Description
Miele, the manufacturer of household appliances, is planning to cut up to 1,100 jobs in Germany. At present, the company employs around 11,000 staff in Germany and over 15,000 worldwide. Miele says that the job cuts are necessary in order to make the company more competitive. The company's sites in Bielefeld, Lehrte, Oelde, Gütersloh, Warendorf and Euskirchen will be affected by the job cuts.
On december 2005, Miele, which announced earlier that it was planning to cut 1,077 out of a total of 11,046 jobs in Germany, is now planning to cut only 888 jobs, according to a company source, and there is also some hope that still fewer jobs may be lost. Management and the works council are reported to have agreed to extend job protection by one year to the end of 2007. So far, around 500 employees have accepted an offer of early or partial retirement.
