Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 24 January 2005, the German car plant Mann+Hummel announced that its manufacturing plant at Grenay in the Pas de Calais region will be closed by the end of 2006. This decision concerns 107 jobs. The company decided to bring together its French and Belgian activities in a new manufacturing plant located at Laval in Mayenne, nearby the French headquarter of the corporation which employs 306 persons. Mann+Hummel said that this decision would allow the company to rationalise its production and improve productivity, thus avoiding relocation to Eastern Europe.
