European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The chemical company Arkema announced on 27 January 2005 that 548 jobs would be suppressed. This decision concerns the four sites of the company and its headquarter. The site of Saint Auban is the most affected with about 380 jobs. However, the Management affirmed that there would not be any closure or redundancy but only early retirements and transfers. The reasons for this restructuring involve strong competition in the sector and a significant deficit in 2004.
Management announced on 17 March 2005 that dozens of jobs would be saved in its Saint-Auban site thanks to a transfer of activity. Nevertheless, this will not change the restructuring of 548 jobs cut in its four others sites. The employees agreed with the redundancy programme on May 2005 which planned 355 suppressions.
In the region of Haute-Provence, the government and Total are taking steps to allow the creation of 560 jobs by 2009. A convention between Total and the State was signed in December 2005 in order to develop employment in the region and help the creation of firms thanks to measures and loans.
