The Société Nationale Maritime Corse Méditerranée (SNCM), a major operator in passenger, vehicle and freight transportation in the Western Mediterranean announced on 26 January 2005 that at least 190 jobs would be suppressed. The company shows a deficit of about €28 millions. The tourist season for 2004 was not good for Corsica. Moreover, the increase of oil price and the two great social conflicts during 2004 made the situation worse. This reduction concerns the sea-going personnel. Unions decided to go on strike on 3 February 2005.
