Description

189 jobs are to go at a clothing firm in Barnsley because of an anticipated slowdown in orders. SR Gent says the sewing factory will close in March 2005 with 145 workers being made redundant. A further 44 jobs are being lost in other areas of the plant which makes clothes for a number of retailers including Marks and Spencer. 450 administration and distribution jobs will be left at the Barnsley site. SR Gent was once one of South Yorkshire's major employers with factories in Barnsley, Rotherham, South Kirkby and Sheffield.

All have gradually been closed and the Dodworth Road site is the firm's last UK manufacturing base with most of its clothes now being produced abroad.
