Description
UK Coal announced the shutting of Ellington Colliery with the loss of 340 jobs. This was the last deep mine in the north east of England. Desperate efforts were made to stem the huge quantities of water pouring into the production unit at the Ellington Colliery in Northumberland with only limited success. This follows the closure by UK Coal of the largest coal complex in Europe - at Selby in summer 2004.
