Description
Stated-owned railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG and trade unions have come to an agreement that guarantees the 150,000 jobs at Deutsche Bahn until 2010 in return for a 5.5 pct reduction in staff costs, the negotiating parties said in a joint statement. Sources also said the operator is planning to cut about 9,000 jobs next year. Deutsche Bahn declined to comment on the job cuts but said staff levels had fallen from 251,000 at the end of 2002 to 243,000 in 2003 and 230,000 at the end of June 2004 (including its cargo unit Stinnes). Of the job cuts next year, 3,600 are understood to come from the passenger division.
