Description

Up to 220 jobs are going at a south Wales firm Yuasa Batteries in Ebbw Vale. The jobs were expected to be cut by March 2005. The Japanese-owned firm, which opened its south Wales plant in 1981, employs 530 people at the site. On 10 December 2004, Yuasa blamed the job losses on 'increasing pricing and cost pressure'. 'There have been huge increases in the cost of raw materials and essential utilities such as electricity and gas, factors which are largely out of the control of the company'. Yuasa would now concentrate on manufacturing lower volume, higher value products while looking to import high volume, lower value products from its factories in the Far East, the company said.
