Description

The government's shake-up of the rail industry will claim the jobs of half of the 530 civil servants involved in the agency charged with running the railways. The transport secretary, Alistair Darling, announced that a new rail group in his department would consist of between 250 and 280 staff. It will replace the Strategic Rail Authority and will give him unprecedented direct control of the national network. Under the terms of his railways bill, a director general of rail will run the group, setting the finance and strategy for the industry.
