Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
According to a press release issued by its local management in the mid of September 2004, the Austrian subsidiary of the Belgian Solvay concern will partially close down its production plant located in Ebensee, Upper Austria. Thus the production of sodium carbonate will be completely dropped. This measure is planned to come into effect in the mid of 2005 and will affect about 130 of 210 employees. According to the management, the closure is due to world market overcapacities as well as increasing energy and transport costs. The management announced its willingness to negotiate with the employees' representatives about a social plan.
