Description

The children’s footwear company Elefanten announced the closure of its manufacturing plant in Vila Nova de Gaia. This measure will affect 321 workers (in its majority women), who will end their contract by mutual agreement. 100% of the capital of Elefanten belongs to British multinational C&J Clark, who already closed two of their footwear manufacturing plants in Portugal over the last three years. In 2001, Clark closed a plant in Arouca and in 2003 in Castelo de Paiva. The company put forward that accumulated debts since 2002 would justify this most recent plant closure. Elefanten was in Portugal since 1984.
