Description

In addition to the reductions in capacity already decided in September, Wärtsilä plans to discontinue engine manufacturing at its Turku factory. The manufacture of large engines will be centred in Trieste, Italy. In the framework of this plan the Turku unit will concentrate on service and maintenance activities. Cooperation talks will be started with Finnish personnel representatives on a reduction of about 480 employees in Turku. On March 2 2004, consultations with personnel representatives at Wärtsilä’s Turku Factory have been completed. During the consultation process the parties considered various alternatives for reducing the surplus capacity in engine manufacturing in the group, and reached a common understanding on the programme of support measures to be offered to those employees being made redundant. A total of 425 employees will be made redundant at the Turku Factory and 23 employees will be offered alternative work.
