Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In March 2003 Alstom announced a European restructuring plan affecting several countries : Germany with 700 jobs, France with 600 jobs, United Kingdom with 450 jobs, Switzerland between 450 and 500 jobs, Poland with 300 jobs and less than 300 jobs in Italy. This restructuring concerns the 'Power Turbo-Systems' sector, which employed 11,000 workers at the time. The calendar of those restructuring will be set unit by unit and country by country. In June 2003, Alstom announced a review of its restructuring plan, to affects a total of 5,000 jobs and that should be effective by the beginning of 2005. In August 2003, Alstom announced another review, affecting 5,000 more jobs in the United Kingdom. In September 2003, the European Commission opened a thorough investigation in order to analyse a package of assistances that the French government granted in support for the group (safety plan of 3.2 billion euros with a French state participation of 800 million euros).
