Description
UK Coal is to close its 'super-pit' at Selby in the summer of 2004. The chief executive, Gordon MacPhie warned that further closures of deep mines could lay ahead if EU directives reducing sulphur emissions were implemented. The closure of the Selby plant amounts to 1,500 job losses and this would reduce the number of deep mines to only eight across the country.
