Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
After the reorganisation of the Dison plant in 2002, management decided to close down the plant of Beyne-Heusay. Alstom's decision has been taken within the framework of its plan to reduce the debts of the group, which will imply the sale of the 'transmission and distribution of electricity' department. The Walloon Minister for employment could reactivate the outplacement unit which was operational for the reorganisation of 2000. Some jobs could be transferred to the site of Dison but negotiations between trade unions and management encounter difficulties concerning the number (between 12 and 35). In December 2003, three members of management were sequestered for a few hours as the workers were on strike. A few days later, a first agreement on the termination payments was approved for the workers. The negotiations will continue for the employees.
