Description
Walzengießerei Coswig, a German metal-casting company, announced the shutdown of its only foundry in Coswig, Saxony. The closure will eliminate about 170 jobs from the plant’s workforce by the end of November 2026.
The decision follows years of low utilisation, the loss of customers, fierce competition and rising energy and metal costs that have made continued operation unsustainable. The company had filed for bankruptcy in November 2025. Bankruptcy proceedings under self-administration were initiated in February 2026. However, no investors were found.
The job losses are concentrated entirely in Coswig.
A social dialogue with the work council is underway regarding a potential severance plan, and IG Metall representatives have voiced concerns about the closure’s impact on workers. Following the closure announcement, a job fair was organised for affected employees, and the IHK began efforts to place the eight apprentices with alternative employers.
Walzengießerei Coswig was part of the Dihag group, which operates around 10 comparable subsidiaries in the steel industry across Europe.
