Description
Deutz, a German industrial engine manufacturer, announced the reduction of 130 to 300 positions in its engines division at the Cologne plant. The restructuring will target the production of small diesel engines and will take place over the next two years.
Deutz has a tradition of manufacturing small diesel engines. However, the division that produces these compact engines is facing falling sales and stiffer competition than other divisions that produce more technically sophisticated engines. The company attributes the low sales to the sluggish economy. At the same time, the company is expanding its business and invests in the manufacturing of technologies for decentralised energy supply and the production of defence technology.
The restructuring only targets the site in cologne. There are currently around 2,600 employees working for Deutz in Cologne. Therefore, the planned reductions can affect more than ten percent of the workforce in Cologne. What job reduction measures will be applied is not clear.
According to company representatives, employee representatives are involved in negotiations regarding the restructuring.
Deutz has around 6,300 employees worldwide. In the first half of 2026, the company increased its turnover to around 1,1 billion euros and quadrupled its profit by 34 million euros.
The last time a restructuring was announced at the Cologne site was in 2025. At the time, 200 jobs were affected: Deutz 2025 - DE.
